Black Canyon of the Gunnison & Ridgway, Colorado

After our stay in Fruita we drove a short distance south to Montrose.  Our friends Bonnie and Dan from The Den invited us to plug in our motorhome on their property. We spent the next three days with them as our personal tour guides to get a taste of their corner of Colorado.

Our first stop was Black Canyon of the Gunnison. It is called this because being so very narrow and deep it is difficult to see the bottom of the canyon through the shadows.

Unfortunately it is difficult to capture the severity and beauty of the cliffs.

They drove us down the 15% grade road to the Gunnison River below.

This picture is for my daughter Kaela. We had two of this twisty, smiley faces (one yellow; the other pink) that I kept wrapped around martini glasses - when they weren't in compromising positions. This on was twisted onto a Jeep in the parking lot of the National Park.

On to Ridgway, the hometown of Dennis Weaver. This 2800 pound metal sculpture has a 21 foot wingspan and is unique in it's placement soaring through the sky with only it's wingtip touching.

This eagle is the memorial for Dennis. You can see the stone prayer stacks placed all around the memorial. This is a beautiful explanation:

A few short steps away is the river and eagle wood carving

We had lunch at "True Grit"; film location of the movie with the same name. Frequently when we are travelling, Tim and I will watch a film associated with our current location.
